how to flourish?

As I marvel at the beauty and particularity of my favourite poppy, I am reminded just how important it is for us to learn how to flourish.

The California poppies have just begun showing their beautiful, bright orange faces on the rocky hillsides of Victoria. I still remember my first trip to Vancouver Island, long before I knew I would live here one day. I was admiring the Golden Poppies on the rocky slopes alongside the highway that was taking us towards the city. They seemed to brighten up the rock faces along our way with joyful smiles.

This delicate flower seems so soft and tender with its silky petals. Yet it is resilient and strong and knows how to flourish in seemingly uninhabitable places. In fact it doesn’t like to grow in the moist, rich soil of my garden. Yet it likes to pop out of the cracks and knows how to flourish on the driest rockiest slopes.

As I marvel at the beauty and particularity of my favourite poppy, I am reminded just how important it is for us to learn how to flourish and find the place(s) that are just right for each of us. Moist, rich soil is great for some plants, but apparently not for California poppies.

Like flowers, each of us needs just the right conditions to flourish. However, often we have a much more difficult time identifying the environment that will help us pop out of the hard shell to open and reveal our most precious gifts.

Ask yourself the following questions on your personal ‘how to flourish’ quest:

  • What are the kind of challenges that call me out of my firm seed?
  • What are the places, people, activities that provide just the right kind of nourishment for me to blossom?
  • What is the kind of rest that renews me most deeply?
  • What other questions do I need to ask myself in order to flourish?

You may not have the answers right now. You may not know how to flourish yet. By pondering these questions, you may slowly live your way into your answers. Just like seeds we all need time to germinate.
