On your courageous journey to career clarity, it may sometimes feel as if you were in a thick fog. You are facing the unknown, feeling lost. This can be quite frustrating, challenging and disorienting. It can really test your patience. I have learnt that the most rewarding insights come to you, when you accept discomfort and relax into it. When you surrender to the fog, you open yourself to receive the insights that want to come to you. Of course, this is easier said than done. I am still learning to accept and surrender with every foggy patch that I encounter on my journey. The story I am about to share with you helps me. I hope it will help you too.
In the winter of 2008 my dear friend, Miriam, and I ventured on an epic journey through Peru and Chile. As part of our journey, we visited Colca Canyon, a river canyon in southern Peru. Colca Canyon is famed as one of the world’s deepest and is a habitat for the giant Andean condor. The morning we arrived at the viewpoint Cruz del Condor at the rim of the canyon, a thick fog obscured our view. We were of course a little disappointed. However, decided to go for a walk along the foggy canyon rim and eventually sat down on a bench, looking into the thick white clouds.
As we surrendered to the fog, we noticed subtle shifts and changes. Occasionally we saw glimpses of silhouettes of the canyon wall on the other side, then the fog would thicken again. As we became absorbed with watching the fog, suddenly, a condor flew by directly in front of us, only a few feet away from our bench. The condor appeared out of the fog swiftly and then disappeared back into the fog. Twelve years later, I can still feel the awe and wonder of that moment of witnessing the majestic flight of this incredible bird in such closeness. We sat in silence for a little while, then we smiled at each other in gratitude. It felt like a gift we received when we surrendered to the fog.
To this day, I call on this awe-inspiring experience each time I find myself in the fog about a decision or challenge I am facing. This powerful memory helps me relax and open to being patiently with what is. As I surrender to the discomfort and let myself be with the anxiety that I am feeling, I feel myself settling into a deeper trust that unexpected gifts will appear out of the fog, just like Condor did. Because without the fog, we would have never witnessed condor flying by so close. The fog, as disappointing as it seemed at first, was essential for this awe-inspiring condor encounter.
I hope this story helps you surrender when you find yourself in the fog on your career clarity journey. As you do, you naturally open yourself to the most unexpected, precious insights. Maybe this story even reminds you of times in your life when you surrendered and the gifts you received as a result. Surrender doesn’t mean that you have to travel alone. It can be far easier to surrender when you open yourself to receive support on this courageous journey. I encourage you to book your free career clarity consultation, now.
